As a classroom community, Gr 1 – 3 learners focus on literacy and numeracy, using a variety of hands-on and engaging strategies. Students explore the world around them through “Creation Studies,” a blend of science-based study, social studies, and health. Children are given weekly opportunities to develop their musical, artistic and physical skills through instruction and practice. Bible lessons, memory work and French instruction through song and story round out the primary program.
In Grade 4 – 6, the learning community practices and builds on skills learned in prior years, including reading, writing, media, mathematics, science, social studies, health, French, Bible, music, art and physical education. Students are ready to enjoy studies of chapter books with themes that foster empathy and understanding for others. As students mature, they are given guidance to apply their learning in fresh ways and to build positive relationships with their peers.
At LHCS our caring, certified teachers spark a curiosity and love of learning through collaboration and exploration. They strive to create a rich learning environment where your child is happy, engaged, and encouraged to explore while learning foundational skills in numeracy, literacy, and spiritual character formation.
For almost 60 years, LHCS has provided learning opportunities where your child can be engaged and encouraged to explore while learning foundational skills in numeracy, literacy, and spiritual character formation.
The curriculum expectations align with or exceed those of the Ontario Ministry of Education; however, a distinct Christian perspective is woven through the learning in all subjects.
Teachers use a variety of time-tested and innovative ways of inviting students into the learning process. They strive to meet individual students where they are and help them grow and progress to the best of their ability.
Through daily devotions and regular Bible lessons, students are grounded in what it means to follow Jesus in their daily lives. Monthly chapels, opportunities to serve the community, and class discussions are also part of the rhythm that nurtures faith development.
Teachers are intentional about building a community atmosphere in their classrooms, using elements of the Responsive Classroom program. Social and emotional development are foundational to student wellbeing and learning.
